The lasting impact of MTNS2EA: Student updates!

We reached out to MTNS2SEA alumni recently and we were so pleased to hear back from many with updates! We asked them to share what they were up to and about the lasting impact MTNS2SEA had on their lives.

During this giving season, we are so happy to share some of the responses we received with you. The first comes from Crystal. She participated in MTNS2SEA in Fall 2021 and graduated in January 2022.

We are grateful for your support of the work MTNS2SEA is doing in the community, and we look forward to sharing more stories with you!

“Safe Space”

October 2023 - “I work at Hearts and Hands post acute rehab in Santa Cruz and I'm in a nursing program at Central Coast College.

The most helpful thing I learned from the program was what a safe space looks like. MTNS2SEA was like a second family to me. It really helped me come out of my shell and be more social, which really helped me with the career I chose. Thank you!”

- Crystal, MTNS2SEA Alumni

The 'safe space' Crystal refers to is the special part of MTNS2SEA. This is created over time, one day at a time. The youth learn to trust that they can be vulnerable, be heard, and be themselves. The adventures push comfort zones and help the group bond through fun in the outdoors.

“I can be brave!”

"I'm working for the YMCA and I love it. School (Cabrillo College) gets tough but always get through it. Mentally, I've matured and I've been the happiest I've ever been. My relationship with my family is better and stronger!

MTNS2SEA showed me I can be brave. No matter how scared I was on the adventures, I always went for it. I learned to make time for myself to go on amazing hikes to stay in shape as well as to keep calm."

- Nate, MTNS2SEA Alumni

Confidence!

"I'm a full time groomer, part time dog walker, and full time cosmetology student. :) Working my way up to being licensed so I can have my own nail business and doing great.

The most helpful thing I learned from MTNS2SEA was how to open up to people, and making friends with new people. I was definitely more shy when I started compared to when we finished. This experience gave me the confidence to go for my dreams. Thank you!"

- Jasmine, MTNS2SEA Alumni

This is the time of year that our individual donors shine! For the past 7 years, individual donors have made up 30% of the budget. Let's do it again! Thank you for considering including MTNS2SEA in your giving this season.

Slow down, notice, and enjoy!

The first few outings of MTNS2SEA's 12-week program are focused on noticing new things in nature. This is a great way to relieve our minds from negative and persistent thoughts and just simply notice the beauty and activity around us. Elkhorn Slough is teeming with life and the amazing staff sets us up with binoculars so the youth can really take their time to see birds, otters, and seals up close and personal in this rich habitat. Our bird scavenger hunt helps the youth get to know each other in a fun way. The hike is slow but the new discoveries come fast!

“It’s like we’re walking on the moon!”

For many of the youth we serve, the trip to Wilder Ranch is the first time they have walked in the sand. Introducing the youth to new places is part of the magic of MTNS2SEA. Not only do these natural places provide beautiful views and healing, they are in our backyard!

We encourage the youth to stop often and look around. A rock may appear to be just a rock, but when we stop and look closely, we see that there is a whole crew of seals relaxing in the sun. It is reminder to allow the wonder of the natural world slow us down and enjoy the simple joys that exist all around us. When we seek out joy, we find that we feel happier and more peaceful.

April 2023

Everything is blooming!

The blooms have been a welcome sight after the winter we experienced.  Just as beautiful are witnessing the ways the youth have grown as we enter the last few weeks of the Spring program. Many of the youth experienced school closures, flooded homes, and displacement and MTNS2SEA has been a welcomed day of relief from the challenges. We teach the participants that when life presents you with a challenge, we need to look in our "bag of tools" to help ourselves overcome the challenge with grace. This is often as simple as taking a walk in nature with a friend or mentor. Movement and beautiful views are often the perfect medicine.

When we can bundle up and enjoy the outdoors, we show the youth how we can adapt to our surroundings and make the best of any situation. With that said, it is time to bring on the sun!!! We feel the change in season and in the youth. The sun is bringing so much beauty to natural spaces and is providing the youth with a perfect place to heal, bond, and have fun.

Mentor update!

One of our goals this year was further developing our mentorship program. After completing the 12-week program, the youth can apply to be a mentor and this semester we have five! Each week they set a goal for themselves that will stretch them in a leadership role. They have come up with some really great ways to support their peers!

Carrying snacks an extra water on hikes, leading check-ins, engaging in conversation with others in the group, and demonstrating how to use the equipment at the climbing gym are a few ways they have been showing leadership. We are so proud!

"I love being a mentor so much, just wanted to thank y'all for the opportunity to do this, I really enjoy my role in the the group."

The Ripple Effect!

We had our last outings of the Fall 2022 program this week and received many inspiring messages from our students. We hope you can take a moment to read what the youth had to say about their experience this semester.

These reflections below are just the start! We strive to create a ripple effect with each group. One of our goals is for the youth to share these experiences and bring the healing power of the outdoors to their friends and families.

If you haven’t already, please consider a donation to our year end campaign and join MTNS2SEA in creating these outcomes for the youth.

Fall 2022 Reflections

Fremont Peak

"Some things I discovered about myself with this program was that being with nature really helped me let go of things and heal. This part of my life will definitely be one of my favorite so far, healing is a difficult thing for me and you guys found a way to get me through things more easily. I enjoyed every part and every obstacle."

"MTNS2SEA has taught me to not hold on to things that have hurt me in the past, but to instead look forward to the opportunities that arise in the future. I also learned to believe in myself and trust that I have the tools to make my situation better."

Point Lobos State Reserve

"I discovered that I could overcome some fears if I have friends to do it with. I learned that I like to go on hikes and take long walks. I also discovered that it is way easier to talk to people that I thought it would be."

"MTNS2SEA has taught me how to let go of the past and look forward in life. It also taught me how to live in the moment and enjoy my surroundings and people around me. I also learned how important it is to take care of your body, a strong body is a strong mind."

How far can the ripples reach?

We invite you to join us in supporting this immersive healing experience for the youth of MTNS2SEA. Our year end campaign is off to a great start and we ask you to consider a donation to MTNS2SEA today. Your contribution means that you are a part of the impact experienced by the MTNS2SEA youth.

THANK YOU!!!

A Month of Gratitude

Last week, we visited Point Lobos State Reserve and the theme of this outing was gratitude! Point Lobos offers some of the most beautiful views in the world, which benefit our brains and bodies. The history of this reserve gives us a lot to be grateful for as well, including the people of the village Ichxenta who cultivated and cared for this land for thousands of years and the California State Parks who manage the land now.

In honor of this theme we will be sending weekly messages of gratitude this month. This week we start with the heart of MTNS2SEA, the students!

Each student we serve has made a choice for themselves to join MTNS2SEA with the intention to learn how to love and care for themselves more deeply, which gives them the hope and motivation to be their very best. We are so grateful that each semester there are 40 youth who say YES to this opportunity for self-growth. Students of MTNS2SEA, we are grateful for you!!!

Gratitude for Meredith

This fall, we have had the honor of getting to know Meredith and she is a fierce and strong young woman! She wowed us on the climbing outing and, in partnership with Pacific Edge Climbing Gym, she received a scholarship for the belay certification class and a 10-visit membership. With this opportunity, she can continue to develop a love for climbing and experience the benefits of exercise and self-confidence that this sport offers. Meredith, we are grateful for you!!!

Gratitude for Alex

Alex participated in the 12-week program last Spring, joined the backpacking group for 3 days and 2 nights in Big Sur, and is now one of 4 peer mentors this Fall. Each week he is eager to help in any way he can. Alex encourages and supports the group members, provides an ear for listening, offers to hold water bottles and lunches on the trail in a backpack, and has been the sweep on a hike to make sure everyone in the group stayed on the trail and safe. We are grateful to have the honor of being part of his journey. Thank you Alex!!!

Thanks for taking the time to learn about these two amazing humans. We are serving many other wonderful students this semester and look forward to sharing more stories with you in this month of GRATITUDE!!!

A Special Thanks to Our Community Partners!

As with all things in life, we cannot do this alone. We are so grateful to live in a community that supports the youth. These local organizations help MTNS2SEA come to life with new experiences and new connections for our participants.

First, we would like to express our gratitude to our partners in education who put their trust in MTNS2SEA. We are so grateful to partner with the educators of Santa Cruz County Office of Education - Alternative Education Department and Costanoa High School. We are honored to serve the youth alongside incredible teachers and staff. Thank you for welcoming us into your schools!

Pacific Edge Climbing Gym is a whole new world for many of our students! The staff at the climbing gym welcomes the new climbers with positivity and encouragement. After this experience the youth often feel energized and confident. When a student is especially inspired, the gym helps support them with safety classes for belaying and discounted memberships. We are grateful for you Pacific Edge!

The harbor is a place full of opportunities and Nomad Sailing Charters offers an introduction to this special place. Captain Thom donates his time and sailboat to offer a new experience in which the students are shown how to prepare the engine, raise the sails, and navigate at the helm. Captain Thom shares stories from the open ocean and offers helpful advice for life. Captain Thom and Nomad Sailing Charters we are grateful for you!

We have the privilege of visiting Elkhorn Slough two times each semester with our students. The first is an exploration to learn about the land management, discover many species of birds and animals, and enjoy walking and talking on the trail. We return for a second visit to join the stewardship team in various projects that support the restoration and future planning of this delicate and important habitat. A special thank you to our friends Andrea and Ariel who help make these outings special.

Flying through the trees, supporting each other, and overcoming fears is what Mount Hermon Adventures is all about. The positive encouragement the youth give each other creates a bonding experience with lasting effects. We are so grateful for the guides who help the students achieve their goals for the day. Thank you Mount Hermon Adventures!

Getting kids outside enjoying activity, exercise, and each other is a shared goal we have with Community Bike Collective. The smiles that come from feeling the wind in their faces, the power in their legs, and the beautiful scenery offered by Fort Ord State Park would not be possible without the support of this community minded organization. Lindsay, Dave, and CBC, we are grateful for the fun you provide!

Many fun days hiking and nights sleeping under the stars have happened in partnership with Youth in Wilderness. In addition to the 12-week program, students have the opportunity to backpack in the Ventana Wilderness. YiW provides amazing outdoor leaders, all the gear, and delicious food for an immersive and memorable experience. YiW, thank you for your support!

A new partner for us is Second Harvest Food Bank. MTNS2SEA youth give back to the community by preparing Weekday Food Packs. We work the line with fun music and other community members lending a hand. We are grateful to the Food Bank for introducing the students to an organization giving back in a big way and also to a new fun way to help their community.

Businesses Who Care!

Continuing with our theme of gratitude for this month, we would like to shout-out the businesses who supported MTNS2SEA last fiscal year (July 2021-June 2022).A special thank you this week to our friends and supporters sharing their business success with the youth. Making new connections and creating opportunities is part of the web of support MTNS2SEA strives to provide for the youth. We are so grateful for these businesses for their support!

Vital Body Therapeutics CBD products are meant to inspire an active and healthy life. Jennifer and Kelly have spent their lives helping their clients restore movement and manage pain naturally. VBT and MTNS2SEA share a love for the outdoors and know how powerful its healing powers can be. Thank you Jen and Kelly for supporting MTNS2SEA!

Smith's Pest Management provides non-toxic solutions that are both pet and child-friendly to keep burrowing and household pests from taking a toll on your home and garden. We are grateful for the support of this community-minded business. Thank you Zach!

Topo Designs believes in a New Outdoor, one that expands the very definition of being outside. It’s an inclusive place that allows us, regardless of who we are, to be both the outsider and the insider, the novice and the pro. We share this goal and appreciate your support Mark!

Quality Water provides fresh, pure drinking water to MTNS2SEA at no cost. The MTNS2SEA hot drink ceremony is a key part of setting our intention for the day. After passing cups with a yummy hot drink, we check-in and share. Shawn and Adrian, we are grateful for your support!

Coursera is a company who has made a commitment to help their employees help their communities. They financially match donations that their employees make to nonprofit organizations. One of our donors had their 2021 Giving Tuesday donation matched through Coursera and MTNS2SEA received twice the amount!

When you are ready to contribute, please check if your employer has a matching program and double your support! Thank you Coursera!

Gratitude for Foundation Funders!

Applying for grants is a labor of love and these foundations believe in the work MTNS2SEA is doing. Foundation grants account for over 30% of our budget and we could not do this without their support.

Community Foundation Santa Cruz supports effective programs and has earned the trust of Santa Cruz County residents. They advocate for a just, equitable, and inclusive community. Thank you Community Foundation for believing in MTNS2SEA!

The Education Opportunity Fund believes that a fair chance, access to opportunity, appropriate and high-quality education, coupled with timely and effective support, will enable young people to reach their full potential and lead fulfilling, productive lives in a rapidly changing, global economy. Thank you for your support EO Fund!

Emerging Jedi Grant provides awards for students who have demonstrated strength of character/good citizenship and/or have honorably and skillfully faced adversity. These awards are in recognition of positive character development rather than specific academic accomplishments. Thank you Emerging Jedi Awards for supporting the youth of MTNS2SEA!

New Connections!

Back in August of this year, our friends at Uroko created a unique design just for MTNS2SEA creating another new business connection in the community. The proceeds from the sale of this tee go to MTNS2SEA to support the work we are doing in the community. We wear this shirt with pride each week on our outings!

Thank YOU!

And last but not least...we end this month of gratitude with a thank you to our generous and loyal donors! We have served over 200 youth since we started back in 2017 and the 311 donors who have supported MTNS2SEA throughout the past 6 years have made this possible.

So often we are focused on the end goal, the peak, and in the process of getting there it is so important to remember the base that is holding it all up. These numbers represent our donors who have been supporting from the very beginning, the growing number of Trail Runners who automatically donate every month, and current donors who have given in the past year. You inspire us to keep moving forward!

Climbing to the Top!

Next week we will be climbing to the top of Fremont Peak. It is a wonderful time to sit on the summit and share gratitude for the base that helped us get there.

We have entered the time of year when giving is at its highest. If you haven't already, we ask you to consider including MTNS2SEA in your end of year giving plans. We will be in touch with a quick message on Giving Tuesday with a reminder and more fun stories from the youth we serve!

New Beginnings

As summer winds down, there is excitement on the horizon! As the students in Santa Cruz county get back to school, we are filled with gratitude and enthusiasm as we prepare for new MTNS2SEA cohorts. There are infinite possibilities for growth, friendship, and adventure and we are here to support the youth on their journey. Be on the lookout for an update on our Fall groups soon!

Opportunity to Give and Receive!

Our friends at Uroko have created a unique design just for MTNS2SEA. When I see this artwork, a metaphor comes to mind. The sun peeking through the mountains and rising over the sea is the perfect scene to describe where we are at right now...a bright light shining on the horizon. The proceeds from the sale of this tee go to MTNS2SEA to support the work we are doing in the community. Springing into Action!

We are in full spring...wait, swing (haha!)...with 4 new MTNS2SEA cohorts. As Spring emerges, so do new healthy patterns and habits, new ways to engage socially, and new ways to talk to ourselves with compassion and kindness. Most importantly, MTNS2SEA continues to provide new experiences for self-discovery and healing. Here are some highlights from our Spring participants.

Point Lobos:
"I love it how I get pushed past my comfort on the MTNS2SEA outings. It makes me feel great, especially on hikes like this."

Fall Creek Trail:
"Today was a great experience. I like seeing new species of plants and trees. I also learned that walking on my own in the woods really open's up your mind."

"Finding slugs and all sorts of little animals was really fun. The hike was new for me and I noticed it felt good to be able to breathe."

Wilder Ranch:
"Today I had a fun time connecting with the group. This is the first time I've been on a hike here and got to see wildlife like birds and seals. I'm excited for what more is to come on these adventures."

Pacific Edge Climbing Gym:
“Today was awesome! I had so much fun and I conquered my phobia of heights! Overall it was a great day. Thank you!"

What will emerge for you this Spring?

We encourage you to engage in the same processes our students are going through now. Take a few moments to notice all the changes happening in this exciting time in the natural world. Just as the buds of new flowers are about to emerge into an unknown world, we hope you will be brave and allow that seed within to you blossom into something beautiful this spring!

We would love to hear from you!
Share with us what new things Spring is bringing for you by completing the form below.

January 2022

We could not have anticipated the enthusiasm and generosity MTNS2SEA would receive when we started this campaign on Giving Tuesday. Since then, we have raised over $30K!!! As we reflect on our first semester after returning to in-person programming and prepare for the spring groups, we are filled up knowing there are so many of you who believe in this work. The future for MTNS2SEA is very bright and on behalf of the students we serve, THANK YOU!

Stay tuned for updates on the MTNS2SEA spring groups. We are thrilled to serve another cohort of incredible young people! Happy New Year and best wishes for a happy and healthy 2022.

With love and gratitude,

Autumn Reflections…

Reflection is an important component of the MTNS2SEA program. The youth we serve take time to reflect on what they have learned about themselves and the world around them over the past 12 weeks. This process helps them see the new set of tools they have gained and can call upon when life presents challenges. The themes and lessons learned with MTNS2SEA will stay with them so they feel equipped to show up each day as their best selves. Below are some student reflections we received from the Fall 2021 cohort. Each young person has their own unique experience and we are honored and humbled to hear about how MTNS2SEA has impacted their lives.

“I am starting to regain my faith in the world and myself. MTNS2SEA helped remind me that I am in control of my own happiness. I have more confidence in myself and feel more comfortable in situations that are out of my control (in a good way).”

“MTNS2SEA helped me improve my social life, my mental health, and change my perspective. I have new friends and learned new activities that I can do all on my own.”

“I became more social and feel more confident. I have grown in a way that I feel motivated to be better for myself and others around me.”

November 2021

Gaining Perspective!

Protective layers have been shed, active listening provides healing, and safe space is created. The youth shared with each other about how perspective can change over time and gained new insight into their own lives.

  • Recognizing vulnerability in a parent after an illness

  • Being your authentic self and letting go of others’ judgements

  • Sharing stories / challenges and discovering that you are not alone

  • Reflecting on lost friendships and celebrating new connections

  • Gratitude for all we have instead of focusing on the things we lack

The climb up to the peak helps them discover that they are capable of more than they think. The reward? A new perspective and 360° views of the Monterey Bay, Salinas Valley, and the Sierras, new insights, and a closer bond with their peers.

"Today was awesome! I liked today’s theme of perspective and really liked the location. I feel like I came out of my shell a little bit and was more present. I want to continue to push myself in a positive way.”

October 2021

We are back!!!

We are so grateful to be back to in-person programming with youth. We are hearing from the youth how much they need MTNS2SEA after the isolation experienced with distance learning and the trauma of living through a pandemic. It is a special gift to provide the opportunity for students to be together, build new relationships, get outside, challenge themselves, and set goals to live their best lives.

Intention… Adventure… Reflection…

"Today was super fun. I started the day tired and not excited to be active. As soon as I started climbing, I got a boost and towards the end I left feeling happy and energized. I’m glad that I participated because my anxiety is 90% gone!”
- student reflection after Pacific Edge Climbing Gym

“The walk was the best part of the trip. I was finding out more about everyone today. I barely talk to anyone so this was an astonishing day. This is the most time I’ve had socializing since Covid started.” - student reflection after Wilder Ranch State Park

Pivoting!

Just like the rest of the world, MTNS2SEA has had to pivot due to the pandemic. The current state of the world has prevented us from in-person programming so we have pivoted! Right now we are providing the following:

Zooming!
  • Weekly Zoom meetings focused on social-emotional support and environmental topics for new MTNS2SEA youth. Not exactly the outdoor experience we are used to (typical zoom meeting screen to the right), however, we are still connecting in a positive way with youth and encouraging outdoor activities especially right now.

  • Alumni outreach and support for our past participants

In addition to the weekly zooms and alumni reach out, we are making ends meet in our own lives with temporary employment, but we await the day with excitement when we can return to our signature Adventurer Program which we believe in with all our hearts.

The impact for our young people will be felt long after COVID disappears. Many young people will likely face issues of delayed academic and social emotional growth and will be in need of the support of the relationships created with MTNS2SEA. We will be back as soon as possible and your support is much appreciated!

Ocean Exploration and Citizen Science with Captain Thom
Captain Thom provided unforgettable sailing experiences this summer. Students were at the helm to learn ocean safety, take samples for red tide monitoring, do some fishing, and even see sharks! Nomad Charters does an amazing job of including the students on all aspects of sailing.

Exploring the Outdoors
The students of Watsonville PAL were introduced to a few of the wonderful State Parks we have in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties. Students learned about Leave No Trace, our local ecology, and how to access and responsibly enjoy the outdoors.

October 2018

MTNS2SEA is off to a great start for the 2018-19 school year. We have been hiking, sailing, paddling, birding, self-reflecting, goal setting, developing leadership skills and building community over the last few weeks. Here's what the students are saying...

"I was so nervous at first knowing we were going to paddle out in the ocean, but once we were there it felt so relaxing. Watching the otters was my favorite part."

"I had a good time being in the forest and was happily surprised by the waterfall. I feel energized and healthy after hiking."

"It's super great that I am making friends my own age. I haven't had some friends in a while."

NEW EXPERIENCES!

MTNS2SEA is all about providing new experiences to expand access to the outdoors and create new opportunities for students. Here are some of the new experiences provided so far this school year...

  • Going on a hike

  • Seeing a whale

  • Using binoculars and birding

  • Seeing a waterfall

  • Driving a sailboat

  • Launching a 400 pound canoe into the ocean with 4 other women!
