MTNS2SEA started in 2017 with its first adventure program. The youth we serve are enrolled in alternative education programs and continuation high schools in Santa Cruz and Watsonville. The opportunity to include outdoor adventures in their weekly schedule is unique and a welcomed change for youth who are dealing with a number of struggles. Students apply for the program and MTNS2SEA staff work with the teachers, administrators, and counselors to give priority to students who need the support most. This creates a dynamic group at each school with youth who have made a commitment for self-growth and community development. MTNS2SEA continues to evolve and currently offers a 12-week school based Adventure Program, Summer Program, and Peer Mentorship Program.

MTNS2SEA Signature Adventure Program

One day per week for 12 weeks, MTNS2SEA youth come together with other youth at their school site to share an outdoor experience. A typical day starts with a hot drink and emotional well-being check-in, a safe space to share stories, challenges, and support. Then, we adventure! The youth challenge themselves in new ways when hiking the trails, climbing the walls, sailing the ship, and giving back to the environment. At the end, we reflect, check-in on what was learned, and set goals for our week to come. Each outing is unique and youth build on their physical and mental skill sets.

peer mentorship

The newest addition to our programming is inviting alumni to join the new MTNS2SEA groups in a leadership role. Peer mentors will lead check-ins, support the new youth using the skills they learned the previous year, and develop more employable skills with weekly meetings with staff and self-reflection and goal setting. The peer mentorship positions are available to students who are interested in pursuing further self-growth and cultivating opportunities in the community for themselves as graduation approaches.
